Spinclass Spin Me Right Round Baby: Spin Class 101If you are tired of your run-of-the-mill cardio routine and are looking for a way to get an intense, sweat-worthy workout in a lively, energetic atmosphere, spin class could be for you. With many available classes in gyms and health clubs across the nation, as well as specialty, spin-only studios (such as Flywheel and Soul Cycle), everyone can get in on the fun.

Is Spinning for You?

Do you like loud music? High-endurance workouts? Group classes? Burning 400-550 calories in 45 minutes? If you answered yes to those questions, then you should definitely check out your local spin class. While the initial idea of spinning can worry even the most hardcore of fitness buffs, once you get the hang of it, it is bound to become your new obsession.

The classes start with your super-jazzed instructor letting you know (read: yelling) when to do what. From pedaling standing or sitting down, pedaling faster or much faster (we said high-endurance) and increasing and lowering your resistance levels. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t keep up the first time, or even the second or third. Spinning is all about building endurance, and it can be customized to fit any fitness level.

What to Wear

When you start spin class the bikes are known to be a bit uncomfortable – hence, padded shorts. If the idea of wearing Kardashian-esque bike shorts doesn’t float your boat, Soul Cycle (one of the specialty spin-only studios in NYC) suggests bringing along a cushioned gel seat but advises that soon enough you won’t need either. Your everyday running shoe may not be your best bet for spin class – Soul Cycle, as well as many of the other spin studios, recommend bike shoes in order to make your “pedal strokes more powerful” and get the most from your workout. You are going to sweat, a lot, so moisture-wick clothing is a must, and ladies, do not forget a proper sports bra!

Tips from Us

Be limber! Stretch before and after your class – this is a vigorous workout – and decrease your chances of injury by warming up your muscles even before the class warm up.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. High sweat workouts mean your body is losing the vital water supply that keeps us healthy, thriving and functioning properly. Get the most out of your workout, no matter the class or routine, by keeping your body well hydrated with H2O.

Have fun! Spin classes feature some really rockin’ music that is guaranteed to get you in the mood to move. Don’t worry about whether or not you can make it another minute; just do your best and have a blast doing it.
